Newcastle Civic Park, King St., opposite Newcastle Town Hall……The Newcastle Grandmothers Against Detention have been holding vigils weekly since February 2016, to protest against the detention of people, particularly children, who have committed no crime and are subjected to torture in faraway offshore detention camps, in impoverished countries who have become dependent on the income they get from detaining those refugees. This is contrary to all of the conventions Australia has signed, to Australian values and to human decency. We urge the government to put an end to the misery and to resettle refugees either in Australia or in countries that will give them safety, healing and a chance to start a new life. We won't rest until the last refugee is removed from Nauru and Manus and resettled in safety.
