We are outraged about what our country is doing to vulnerable children.
We are all grandmothers and we take our inspiration from the Mothers and Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo in Argentina, and the Canadian 'Grandmothers to Grandmothers' campaign.
We call for release into safe haven. The central point of the 2000 strong Grandmothers Against Detention of Refugee Children is the necessity to release all refugee children with their families and all unaccompanied minors to a safe haven. For those who wish to accept the US option their ongoing care must be guaranteed. The others must be brought here to safety. Their suffering at our hands is unconscionable.
We are deeply concerned by the way our country is treating these children, who are dehumanised. They are robbed of their names and identity to become mere numbers. Their human rights to security, safety, education and adequate health care are being stolen away. Australia is robbing these vulnerable children of hope.
We will talk loudly and often to politicians, to friends, to neighbours.
We wish to create momentum across Australia to free all refugee and asylum seeker children from detention and to free them with their families in to safe haven.
