Australian asylum policy

The UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights has condemned Australia’s treatment of refugees – particularly those who arrive by boat – drawing particular attention to the severe negative impacts of family separation. The Committee also raised concerns about the harsh conditions in offshore detention centres and called on the government to bring all detainees on Manus and Nauru to Australia for processing. Meanwhile, Amnesty International’s Secretary-General Salil Shetty has warned that hardline border protection policies like Australia’s return people to extremist environments, and risk fuelling global radicalisation and terrorism.
